Three popsicles per day--Doctor's orders!
I would not normally be feeding our 22 month old daughter, Erin, Popsicles for breakfast, lunch and dinner. But there comes a time when you have to, if the doctor orders it.
Last night, we were getting ready to have some friends over and I was helping the kids clean up their rooms. We were in Ethan's room and he has a small table and chairs there that he sits at to do puzzles or color. Erin was sitting on one of the chairs. She then decided to stand up and the chair toppled over. In the process of falling (only about 1 foot from the ground), she bit her tongue. I thought she just bit her lip a little and I was looking to see where the blood was coming from when I saw her tongue. She bit ALL the way through it with all four of her top teeth. Clean through... Here's a photo. It is not for those who get queasy easily.
Apparently, the doctors don't do tongue stitches unless your tongue is detached on the outer edges and they said that if they did do stitches on her, it might cause her tongue to swell too much. They said that the good news is that next to the eye, the tongue is the second fasted healing part of the body. They also said that it will take only about a week for it to heal. We have to keep a good eye on it and make sure that it heals properly so that her speech isn't affected later.
Doctor's orders are to take the prescribed antibiotic, rinse her mouth out with water after only eating soft foods, take Tylenol as needed and eat three Popsicles per day. She's been in great spirits. She's only had a few fussy times and she seems a little more "low key" than normal but happy. Our only issue right now trying to keep her fingers out of her mouth.
I'm the Queen of Klutziness. This is one area where Erin takes after me. I can't even count how many times my parents were dragging me to the doctor because I had dropped something on my foot (a car battery one time), stepped on a toothpick and got it stuck all the way into my foot, tripping and blowing my knee out...the list goes on. It's actually quite embarassing. At least I've grown out of *some* of it. I pray the same for her and that we won't have to have that many trips to see the doctor.
